How IPL-Sq®ETHERA MX™ works:
Intense pulsed light or IPL emits high-energy photons like a laser, but over a range of wavelengths. It is a polychromatic, non-coherent, multi-directional light that is filtered to select its targets.
The basis of the intense pulsed light system is the emission of a high-intensity discharge lamp with a broad spectrum (~400-1200 nm), transmitted by a micro-controlled system combining time and electrical current.
The IPL-Sq® ETHERA MX™ handpiece can be considered one of the most advanced intense pulsed light systems on the market.
Due to the wavelength range, the light is captured by several targets:
- Melanin, which colors the skin in brown (IPL removes spots)
- Hemoglobin, which colors vessels red (IPL reduces couperosis)
- Water in the dermis (IPL reduces fine lines, tightens pores and restores skin tone).
The light passes through the epidermis and reaches its targets:
- The dilated vessels are filled with red blood cells. They intensely capture the light beam and begin to burn. The heat spreads throughout the vessel and destroys its wall.
- Pigmented spots at the base of the epidermis capture the laser beam and burn. They darken and are gradually eliminated through the epidermis.
- The water in the dermis captures the light beam, and the heat activates the fibroblasts that regenerate the dermis to give a radiant complexion and an anti-aging effect (toned, plumped-up skin, with less fine lines and wrinkles).
To work properly, the epidermis must be transparent. The skin must be melanin-free, otherwise it risks burning: you can't be tanned or too matte.
The benefits of IPL-Sq® ETHERA MX™:
Photorejuvenation uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to achieve a thermal action limited to the superficial and middle dermis, while preserving the epidermis through a cooling system to attenuate:
- pigmented spots: sunburn spots known as solar lentigo.
- couperose lesions: rosacea, dilated vessels, redness.
- signs of solar aging (elastosis, superficial wrinkles, helioderma).
- dilated pores.
We successfully treat the face, neck, décolleté and back of hands.
Course of a session:
The session is performed without anesthesia.
The eyes are protected by extra-ocular shields or specific protective patches.
A thin layer of ultrasound gel is applied to the entire area to optimize light penetration into the skin.
Each IPL shot is perceived as a large, painless flash of light (“rubber band shot”).
Treatment is carried out at the dermatology practice, in 2 to 4 sessions, spaced out over a period of about 1 to 2 months.
After the session:
Immediately after treatment, the skin is slightly red and the spots darken. There may be a sensation of sunburn and slight swelling for a few hours.
There are no social restrictions, and you can apply make up the next day.
As long as any redness is present, you should protect yourself from the sun.
Number of sessions and results:
The number of sessions is generally between 2 and 4, depending on the indication.
Results are progressive over a few weeks, as the targets burned by the IPL are then eliminated by the inflammatory reaction. Brown spots become darker and then disappear, while vascular lesions gradually fade.
